Effect of Regular Use of High-dose Nebulized β2-Agonists on Resting Energy Expenditure, Weight, and Handgrip Strength in Patients With Chronic Airflow Limitation: Expression of Results and Statistical Analysis

Effect of Regular Use of High-dose Nebulized β2-Agonists on Resting Energy Expenditure, Weight, and Handgrip Strength in Patients With Chronic Airflow Limitation: Expression of Results and Statistical AnalysisA second REE measurement was then made and the results of the two measurements were averaged. Analysis of variance showed no difference between the first and the second Vo2 and Vco2 measures on the same day. Urinary nitrogen was assayed by the Kjheldal technique to give an estimate of nonprotein respiratory quotient using the equations of Frayn. REE was estimated and fuel oxidation rates were calculated.

Expression of Results and Statistical Analysis
REE was expressed as kilojoules per minute, kilojoules per hour per kilogram body weight, kilojoules per kilogram of FFM and as a percentage of the value predicted by the equation of Harris and Benedict.
Data are given as mean (SD), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are given. Baseline differences between groups were analyzed by the unpaired two-tailed t test. Changes over time were analyzed by calculating the change from baseline for each patient and then comparing the two groups. Statistical significance was taken at the 0.05 level. The sample size was calculated to give a >80% chance of detecting a 7.5% change in REE with a set at 0.05.
Results
Twenty patients were recruited and had an initial REE study. Two patients died before their repeat study due to exacerbations of their respiratory condition, and one patient refused to return for a second study. One patient who had discontinued salmeterol therapy in the interim period was excluded as there are no data on the effect of this drug on metabolic rate. Data from the remaining 16 are analyzed. The mean age was 64.4 years (range, 41 to 76 years), and five were women. Mean FEV1 was 1.04 L (0.77 L), mean FVC was 2.06 L (1.02 L), FEV/FVC was 48% (14%). As a result of the independent clinical assessment, eight patients were prescribed high-dose nebulized salbutamol, and eight were advised to continue their regular MDI salbutamol treatment.
